Easy Homemade Pretzels
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F or 45°C)
1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
For Boiling:
10 cups water
2/3 cup baking soda
For Topping:
Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions:
Prepare the Dough:
Activate Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
Mix Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and melted butter. Stir until a dough forms.
Knead Dough:
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
Let Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Pretzels:
Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
Prepare Boiling Solution:
In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and 2/3 cup of baking soda to a boil.
Shape Pretzels:
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 18 inches long. Shape each rope into a U shape, then cross the ends over each other to form a pretzel shape. Press the ends gently to seal.
