Candied Yams Recipe

Candied Yams Recipe
Ingredients:
4 large yams (sweet potatoes can also be used), peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slices
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar (packed)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional, for added texture)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Yams:

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Peel and cut the yams into 1/2-inch slices. Place the slices in a large pot and cover with water.
2. Boil the Yams:

Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until the yams are just tender but still firm. They should not be fully cooked through. Drain the yams and set them aside.
3. Make the Syrup:

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Stir in the brown sugar, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, salt, and water. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
4. Combine Yams and Syrup:
